Congrats on the job and best of luck in your new role. I aspire to work in a college full time, and I have certainly noticed the issues you are describing. In fact, some of the later year students in my program talked about how difficult the job search process is. If I recall correctly, they were talking about needing to submit a minimum of 40 applications to have a realistic shot of landing an academic job (and that number might be low).

It's a long story (https://markplato.substack.com/p/the-road-less-traveled?s=w), but I decided to take a break from my PhD program.

All of which is to say, I am currently evaluating career paths. I still aspire to work in a college setting, but am broadening my search.

Thank you for the informative and insightful post.

Congratulations, Allison! That is wonderful news for you! Best of luck with the wedding, move, and book project. I've found it really difficult to write in my first year of a permanent academic job so write while you can!
